Play Synopsis
Unveiling the Great Canadian Caper is designedas a performed radio play. The audience is presentas the mechanics of the radio mystery unfold, theFoley artist’s sound effects and the backstage dramas that ensue during the recording. The radio play is titled The Great Canadian Caper whichcentres on the theft of $20,000 worth of maplesyrup from Sylvester Gosling’s Maple farm in thefictional hamlet of Sweet River, 30 km’s from North Bay, ON and makes up most of the performance. Private Eye, Susan Cleary happens to be in the area for the local maple syrup festival when she hears of the heist and can’t resist the sweet smell of a mystery. It is a melodramatic mystery, whilethe antics of the voice actors and crew provide thecomedy. It is set in a simple recording studio at LARK Radio in 1950.
Characters Cast: 5 women, 3 men
Bernard Stanley: Bernard is the narrator. He hasa deep, resonant voice and has been a radiobroadcaster for 25 years. Several attempts tobreak into film have been unsuccessful as hewasn’t very good at being any character other than himself. That doesn’t stop him from bringing acertain amount of animation to his narration. Hedoes sometimes lose the plot and his place,especially if there is a “femme fatale” playing herrole.

It's 1950 and at the Lark Radio station the voice actors and Foley artists have arrived to broadcast the second installment of a series featuring the charming private eye, Susan Cleary. As they await the arrival of Richard Lark with the show's scripts, his tearful wife, Mabel arrives with instructions to take his place. During the backstage antics the cast and crew will present the melodramatic mystery, The Great Canadian Caper with the Foley artist executing the sound effects on stage while the pianist adds the dramatic musical effects.
