Poseidon – Male 40+
A powerful person (god) who finds himself powerless to help the women who once worshipped him and sought his protection. Poseidon had built the walls of Troy to protect it but after a dispute with the king, he sided with the Greeks to destroy the city. Now he mourns the fate of the civilization and the people he feels responsible for.
Hecuba – Female 45+
The former Queen of Troy, now a prisoner reduced to awaiting her fate. She shifts between anger and grief at the loss of her power, her city and the plight of its women, trying to find purpose and take action in the face of an uncertain future.
Helen – Female 19-30
Magnetic yet alone, Helen’s beauty incited the Trojan War. This makes her the enemy of the Trojan women. She survives by accepting how others, men and women, see her. Her cynical strength has protected her, knowing she is a ‘prize’ whose power will live on in history.
Cassandra – Female 19-30
Daughter of Hecuba, princess of Troy and once priestess of Apollo, she is now lost and ethereally mad. She has seen the future of the women of Troy and those visions have left her telling truths that no one wants to hear.
Andromache – Female 25+
Daughter-in-law to Hecuba, full of anger and reproach. She searches for a glimmer of hope that her life might still have meaning in the legacy of her son, a prince of Troy, whose father was a war hero.
Talthybius – Male 20+
Given the horrible assignment of guarding the women of Troy, Talthybius is a herald and soldier acting under inhumane orders.
Chorus of Women – 6 Females all ages
The women of Troy are from all walks of life in a diverse, vibrant city. They mourn the loss of their home and cling to their identities and to each other. They are every woman facing war and displacement. Speaking at times as individuals and at others with one voice, the Chorus is onstage throughout the play. Some choreographed movement will be required.

In the wake of their devastating defeat, the women of Troy, all now widows, wait on the beach below the ravaged city to be claimed by their Greek conquerors as slaves and concubines. Though the war is over, exile and degradation lie ahead and the fates of these women, including Queen Hecuba, her daughter Cassandra, the doomed, mad prophetess, and her daughter-in-law Andromache, widow of the great Hector, are still in the balance.
