PREPARATION

Alumnae Theatre Company is seeking submissions from non-union directors for its production of Public Enemy.

Three generations of a family (and one combative squirrel) gather together to argue over current events, finances, and culture, with everyone looking to blame someone else for society’s ills in this satirical examination of how judgment can both divide and unite people. A blistering, rowdy take on the family drama, Public Enemy asks, who’s really responsible for all our suffering? Winner of the 2015 prix Michel Tremblay.

Cast: 4 women (including 1 girl to play 11 years old), 3 men (including 1 teen boy), 1 squirrel

To apply, please email submissions@alumnaetheatre.com and include the following:

  • A resume outlining your theatrical experience
  • Contact information (including email address, phone number, and mailing address)
  • The play(s) for which you would like to pitch

If selected to pitch, you will receive a full copy of the script(s) in which you expressed interest, guidelines for your written submission, and an invitation to present your pitch in-person at Alumnae Theatre. Pitch presentations will last roughly 20 minutes, including questions from the Director Selection panel.

Pitch presentations will be held at Alumnae Theatre in Toronto (70 Berkeley Street) between May 3rd and 9th, 2025.

Director candidates are welcome to recommend producers or co-producers for their production team. Please note that this is an unpaid, non-union position.

Alumnae welcomes voices from diverse communities, and encourages submissions from equity-seeking groups, including those who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, Trans, Nonbinary, Queer, Neurodivergent, and intersections of those identities and beyond.

SYNOPSIS
Three generations of a family argue over current events, finances, and culture, with everyone looking to blame someone else for society’s ills in this satirical examination of how judgment can both divide and unite people. Elizabeth, the matriarch, has invited her children and grandchildren over for dinner. Instead of a nice family meal, it quickly slides into the adults arguing in the dining room and the kids fighting in the living room. Rapid-fire dialogue fuses and overlaps, but no one listens to each other. A blistering take on the family drama, Public Enemy asks, who’s really responsible for all our suffering?
