PREPARATION

Alumnae Theatre Company is seeking submissions from non-union directors for its production of New.

The arrival of a Bengali bride to a small university town in 1970 shakes up a tight-knit group of Indian immigrants, including the husband she’s never met. Tradition and counterculture collide for three women and their husbands as their perceptions of identity, sexuality, and the meaning of freedom are challenged by the spirit – and actions – of this fearless young woman. Nominated for the Governor General’s award for drama in 2024.

Cast: 4 women, 3 men

Alumnae Theatre is prioritizing submissions from South Asian artists for this position.

To apply, please email submissions@alumnaetheatre.com and include the following:

  • A resume outlining your theatrical experience
  • Contact information (including email address, phone number, and mailing address)
  • The play(s) for which you would like to pitch

If selected to pitch, you will receive a full copy of the script(s) in which you expressed interest, guidelines for your written submission, and an invitation to present your pitch in-person at Alumnae Theatre. Pitch presentations will last roughly 20 minutes, including questions from the Director Selection panel.

Pitch presentations will be held at Alumnae Theatre in Toronto (70 Berkeley Street) between May 3rd and 9th, 2025.

Director candidates are welcome to recommend producers or co-producers for their production team. Please note that this is an unpaid, non-union position.

Alumnae welcomes voices from diverse communities, and encourages submissions from equity-seeking groups, including those who identify as Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, Trans, Nonbinary, Queer, Neurodivergent, and intersections of those identities and beyond.

SYNOPSIS
It’s 1970s Winnipeg—a time of revolution and radical possibilities—and an apartment building of Indian immigrant friends is about to be transformed by their latest arrival. A young Bengali Muslim woman, Nuzha, has just married Qasim over the phone at his mother’s insistence, and can’t wait to start her new life with him. But Qasim struggles to let go of his true love, a Canadian nurse named Abby, making him an emotionally and physically distant husband. Broken-hearted but full of pluck, Nuzha finds comfort and adventures on her own terms by exploring everything her new community has to offer. From braving the bus schedule to building close relationships with Qasim’s friends, Nuzha’s discoveries are thrilling, enriching, and crack open new possibilities for everyone.
